Faced with a massage menu, the same question always comes up: which massage should I choose? The answer depends less on the technique itself than on what you expect from the session. Here are some simple guidelines to help you choose well.

Relaxing massage: which massage calms the mind?

Slow, enveloping movements, light to medium pressure, essential oils: the relaxing massage works first on the nervous system. It is the one to choose after a stressful period, when you are sleeping badly or simply need to “switch off”. Over 1h20, it becomes a true journey; in 50 minutes, it is still an excellent break.

Toning massage: for deep tension

Here, the pressure is firm and the movements — kneading, friction, gliding pressure — target muscle knots in the back, neck, shoulders or legs. The toning massage suits people who sit for long hours, athletes and anyone with recurring muscle pain. It can feel a little intense at the time; the relief, however, lasts.

Hot stone massage: heat that unknots

Smooth, heated basalt stones are placed and then glided along the body. The heat penetrates the tissues deeply and relaxes the muscles without strong pressure. It is the ideal massage if you want real muscle relaxation but dislike firm pressure, or in winter, when the body craves warmth.

Californian massage: all-over relaxation

Born in the 1970s, the Californian massage strings together long, fluid, continuous movements over the whole body, like a wave. It seeks both physical and emotional relaxation, with particular attention to the rhythm and continuity of touch. It is often the massage chosen for a special occasion or a session for two.

Which massage to choose: how to decide?

  • Stress, mental fatigue, disrupted sleep → relaxing massage.
  • Knots, muscle pain, tight back → toning massage.
  • Tense muscles but a dislike of strong pressure → hot stones.
  • A wish for complete relaxation, from head to toe → Californian massage.

And if you still don’t know which massage to choose, talk to your therapist before the session: a good massage always begins with a few minutes of listening. Finally, note that a hammam before the massage prepares the muscles with heat and makes any of these techniques more effective.
